Overflow

CEDEAL, an NGO in Ecuador focused on supporting women in vulnerable situations, faced challenges with its outdated website. Maintenance was inefficient, and everyday tasks like publishing blog updates were time-consuming. In response to these issues, they requested a new website built on a user-friendly platform.

As a freelance designer, I created a modern and user-friendly website for CEDEAL, featuring Information Architecture, a comprehensive Style Guide, Template Customization, and Responsive Web Design to ensure a seamless user experience across devices.

Process

CEDEAL is a social-purpose foundation in Ecuador dedicated to addressing social exclusion and inequalities in gender and ethnicity. It focuses on marginalized urban and rural women, including farm workers and Indigenous and Afro-descendant women. Through pedagogy, it aims to improve the quality of life and promote sustainable growth for vulnerable groups, guided by innovation, ethics, solidarity, and equity.

Before redesigning CEDEAL's website, I conducted user research to understand its audience. Interviews with CEDEAL staff revealed that 50% of workshop participants are women seeking entrepreneurship opportunities, 25% with children looking for a purpose and employment, 15% are teenagers pursuing education, and 10% are young women seeking training to support their families. Participants come from various regions of Ecuador.

This research informed discussions about retaining essential pages and incorporating new interactions to support CEDEAL’s users more effectively.

Outcome

Cedeal is an NGO dedicated to helping people in vulnerable sectors. It created its own educational and written materials, which it wanted to share on its website. To support this, we designed a clean, minimal, and user-friendly website that reflects its mission.

The homepage features a prominent call-to-action (CTA) button that takes users to their Social Work page. There’s also a section with Cedeal’s mission and vision, paired with four key images that share essential information about their work. We added a "Latest News" block with a convenient "Read More" button so users can easily explore updates. To keep visitors informed, we included an events section highlighting what’s coming up in the next few months. The last section showcases Cedeal’s projects alongside an inspiring quote, followed by the footer containing their contact information, social media links, and useful navigation shortcuts.

The website redesign was a big success! Both employees and users were impressed. Two standout features were the new form linked to an internal chat for faster responses and a donation button that significantly increased engagement. One challenge we faced was finding an easy-to-use platform for Cedeal to manage their blog and content. To help with this, I provided training sessions on using Wix and shared tips on managing intellectual property rights for photos and videos. It was a rewarding experience to see their vision come to life!
